Contractors & trades

The job goes to whoever picks up first.

Roofing, painting, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, remodeling — the work is won on the phone and lost in the follow-up. Here is what to fix, in the order that pays.

A homeowner with a leak does not call one contractor. They call four, and they book the first one who answers — not the best one, not the cheapest one, the first one. Industry after industry, the studies land in the same place: responding in minutes rather than hours is worth several times the conversion rate. You already know this. You have lost jobs to it, and you have won jobs because somebody else was up a ladder.

The problem is that being up a ladder is the job. You cannot answer the phone and cut in a ceiling line at the same time, and hiring somebody to sit by a phone that rings six times a day does not pencil out.

So the phone is the first thing we fix, and it is usually the cheapest thing on the plan. Every missed call gets an instant text back that acknowledges the caller by name, answers the two questions they were going to ask anyway — do you cover my area, roughly what does this run — and offers a slot. You come down off the roof to a booked appointment instead of a voicemail icon.

The second thing is the quote. Most contractors write estimates at night because the day is full, which means the fast-mover advantage you just bought back gets handed straight to whoever quotes same-day. Templated estimates built from your own line-item pricing turn forty minutes into five, and they come out looking like the same company sent all of them.

Where we’d start

In this order, for this kind of business.

Ordered by what tends to pay back soonest for contractors — not by what is most expensive. Your plan may reorder it once we’ve looked at what you already have.

What this looks like built out

The case study on this site is a contractor: Redux Paint and Fine Finish, a painting company in Glendale. Its estimate template generates a signed-ready PDF from a job’s line items, its site carries a separate page for each service and each of eighteen towns it works in, and its journal publishes without anybody sitting down to write. It is the same owner as this business, which is exactly why every part of it is open for you to inspect.

FAQ

Contractors: the questions we get asked

I already get plenty of work by word of mouth. Why bother?

Then do not start with marketing — start with the estimate and invoice side, and keep the referrals doing what they are already doing. Word of mouth is the best lead source there is and nothing here replaces it. What it does not do is survive a slow season, and the time to build the other channel is while you are busy, not after the phone goes quiet.

Does the automated callback sound like a robot?

It sounds like a text from your business, because that is what it is, and you write the wording. It does not pretend to be you, it does not invent a price, and the moment the conversation needs a real answer it hands off to you with everything the customer has already said attached. A caller who gets an obviously fake conversation is more annoyed than one who got voicemail.

What about the seasonal swing?

It is the strongest argument for doing this at all. Search demand for exterior work climbs months before the phone does, so the content and the local pages have to be in place well ahead of the season to catch it. Ads get switched off in the dead months rather than burning budget, and the follow-up sequences keep working on last season’s quotes that never closed — which is usually the cheapest work in the whole plan.

Can you handle multiple trades or crews?

Yes, and the pipeline stages are where that gets decided. A single-crew painter and a shop running three crews across two trades need genuinely different setups — one needs a schedule, the other needs dispatch. That is the sort of thing the walkthrough exists to catch before anything gets built.
